Little Feet

Nau mai, haere mai. Welcome to our Teen Parent Unit. We look forward to sharing this period of your life and hope that together we can help you achieve your dreams. We also hope you will gain the maximum benefits from your experiences in the Teen Parent Unit.

Sue Ford
Director

Our objectives are:

  • To maintain and develop the education and training paths of teenage parents beyond the birth of their children
  • To foster the development of positive parenting skills among teenage parents
  • To enhance the self-esteem of teenage parents
  • To enhance the employment prospects of participants.

Philosophy/Kaupapa:

  • To provide quality holistic educational opportunities
  • To ensure that education is accessible psychologically and culturally
  • To encourage self-confidence
  • To increase credits in literacy, numeracy and other subjects
  • To provide opportunities for re-skilling or rehabilitation as a result of child-rearing
  • To provide advice and encouragement for daily life skills
  • To develop personal attributes and skills for employment.

We will:

  • Create an environment that is spiritually, culturally and gender sensitive
  • Operate programmes that will enable all students to realise their full potential as individuals and to develop the values needed in Aotearoa
  • Provide equity of educational opportunity for all students by identifying and removing barriers to learning and achievement
  • Establish clear learning objectives, monitor student performance against these objectives to achieve and meet each students individual needs
  • Promote the principles of The Treaty of Waitangi.

Uniform

Students must be in uniform when attending classes and for any other school related activity.

  • Students are to wear the approved Polo shirt and/or Jacket and any plain coloured trousers/jeans/or skirts.
  • Sandals or covered shoes of any colour so long as they are clean and tidy. No jandals.
  • Appropriate clothing must be clean and tidy.
  • Unacceptable dress: mini skirts, extremely short shorts, striped or sports trousers.

Attendance

  1. If you are absent due to sickness you must notify the Director as soon as possible. For absences due to midwife or other appointments the Director must be given one days notice. After three days away you are expected to produce a Medical Certificate. This is what is expected in the workplace.
  2. If you leave the Teen Parent Unit during the day, you must sign out. The Sign Out Clipboard is in the class room and the Director needs to be notified.
  3. Students intending to sit external examinations must attend regularly to qualify. Your co-operation in ensuring regular attendance helps develop good work habits and relieves staff from the time-consuming task of checking doubtful absences.
  4. Pregnant Teen Mums are allowed up to four weeks off full-time after the birth of their baby. They are expected part-time for two weeks, until after their six week check gives them the all clear to return full-time. Towards the end of her pregnancy, in the last month, the young mum may need time off due to tiredness or for other reasons. This is to be negotiated with the Director.

School Rules

  1. Smoking
The Campus is a Smoke Free Zone. For anyone sharing cigarettes with the school children, an instant dismissal will apply.
  2. Alcohol and Drugs
Anyone under the influence of/or in possession of drugs and/or alcohol whilst on campus or a class trip will be instantly dismissed.
  3. Non-Violence
Verbal and physical abuse of any kind will not be tolerated. Dismissal may apply if necessary.
  4. Off-Campus Field Trips
Students will be expected to go on organised field trips. As you are representing the school, students MUST conduct and dress themselves in a professional manner at all times.
  5. Be Punctual to Class
  6. Cell Phones must be turned off in class.
They can be used at interval and lunchtime. Be aware cell phones used on the school grounds are likely to be confiscated due to mainstream school rules.

TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Motor Vehicles

Students wishing to bring a car to school must show their drivers licence to the Teacher-in-Charge. This will be copied and filed. Students are reminded that no passengers are to be carried if they are on a restricted licence. Nobody is to use their vehicle during school hours unless prior arrangements have been made with the Director.

Van

We offer limited spaces on the van. You are picked up from your home and you must be ready when the van driver comes. After school you will be taken home. Any changes are to be discussed before the van departs from the school premises.

If you do not require transport you must contact the Director before 7.00am.

You will be charged if you have not phoned in!

In situations of concern it is the Director's role to give:

  • A verbal warning
  • A written warning
  • A stand down period without Childcare, until a final solution can be reached (you may be encouraged to leave if you are over the age of 16).

Dispute Resolution and Complaints

Problems usually result from a lack of communication.

To resolve a dispute in a constructive way you might:

  • Discuss your concern with the person with whom you have the problem. Try to avoid an adversarial approach.
  • Assume there has been a misunderstanding, not intentional malice. The more you can resolve problems in an informal, personal level, the more effective we will be in the long run.

If the complaint is not resolved, or the issue is of such a personal nature or retribution is feared, then you should discuss the situation with a staff member.

If the complaint is about a teen parent class, you can go to the Director or the Student Representative.

If the complaint is about the Fraser's Little Feet Childcare Centre, contact the Director, Kay Mes on (07)846 8620.

If you feel a satisfactory resolution has not been reached, a written complaint should be filed with the Director who will contact suitable personnel.
