HomeScience Faculty Year 9Courses9.4M Patterns in Chemistry (Mainstream)

Year 9 Mainstream and Enrichment

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define an element and recognise atomic structure.
  2. Know the names and symbols of common elements.
  3. Be introduced to the Periodic Table and recall where to find metals and non-metals.
  4. Define a compound.
  5. Recognise that acids react with carbonates and metals.
  6. Describe how indicators can be used to test for acids and bases.
  7. Carry out the tests for oxygen, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
  8. Recall that hydrogen is produced when an acid and a reactive metal react.
  9. Write word equations which correctly name the salts produced by different acids.
  10. Recognise that some metals will not react with acids.
  11. Recall that carbon dioxide is produced when an acid and a carbonate react.
  12. Write a word equation for the reaction between an acid and a carbonate.
  13. Carry out a neutralisation reaction.
  14. Write a word equation for a reaction between an acid and a base.
  15. Recognise and interpret the pH scale.
  16. Make an indicator.
