CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES & SUPERVISION
|
As with all professional counselors/nurses/doctors/psychologists we are bound by the ethics of our professional associations to adhere to privacy/confidentiality issues. Over the years, the issue of confidentiality – which is always foremost with adolescents – has been found in our evaluations to no longer be a problem for our students. As a Health Centre team we believe that one of the most important aspects of a centre such as this, is that when applicable, we can work as a team in the best interests of our clients. With our clients permission we share information with relevant people. For example, if the counselor is confronted with a self-harming, drug taking, depressed student – the nurse/doctor/counselor/drug & alcohol counselor/psychologist may all be aware of the student’s needs. Before sharing information with any other member of the team we initially gain permission from our client.
We work in exactly the same way that an outside medical practice and counseling practice would except we do encourage students to share information with their parents/caregivers. We are always more than happy to receive referrals from parents.
The majority of the Health Centre staff have on-going outside professional supervision.
